Artist's Comments

I decided to delve even further into other artist's versions of kaiju for this one. Now, the actual Godzilla 2000 is not in here and theres a reason for that. One, there are more versions of Godzilla period then there are of one particular suit. Two, I hate the purple spikes 2000 has so I'd like to distance myself away from it as much as possible, though the head and everything else are fine. Anway, Here are the four I picked based on just being so radically different from each other and all being created after the year 2000, thus 'Godzilla 2000 Study'.

Final Wars Concept Godzilla by Toho:
I personally like this version alot. It's dark, powerful, and generally scary as hell. It has that doom eye look that the GMK Godzilla has but its more refined and it's body isn't really ponderous looking. This version has a pretty athletic build and a solid upright posture that gives it a good degree of presence. The odd thing about FW Concept Godzilla is that he has an element of Burning Godzilla with the red chest. The nose is rather oddly placed, being up near his eyes. He's also a very thorny bastard with clusters of them on the shoulders and rows of them down his legs. Touching this Godzilla is going to hurt. His arms are respectfully beefy and his claws look deadly and powerful. His tail seems a tad on the short side but that may be because of the perspective. This Godzilla has only two rows of spikes and they start rather high on his neck so he kinda got this mowhawk thing going. Generally I like this one and aside from an odd choice in spike placement he's an effective contender.

Godzilla Neo by Matt Frank:
You guys should have known I'd eventually get around to really analyzing this bad boy. The Godzilla that started the 'saurian movement' amongst Godzilla depictions, Godzilla Neo is what happens when you take Godzilla and make him conform to a mostly full dinosaur skeleton structure. His face and neck are perhaps the best parts, that theropod like skull and powerful armored neck and muscled throat are perhaps the most enjoyable things about this Godzilla as we could easily imagine this guy peeking around the corner of Jurassic Park one rainy night. His arms are anchored further down due to his more angled spine yet they are longer and more muscular with the thumb ending up as a dew claw like spike. The waist is where it gets kinda weird with it angled down and back while the legs are still mounted up front. Basically Godzilla Neo is drawn with the same body of most fantasy theropods, giving him slightly stronger prehistoric roots without having him conform to the straight horizontal spine that all real theropods have. He's a mutation after all so it understandable. His legs are thick and stocky but not overly so. Not sure if he could support himself with that leg structure but he's a kaiju so who cares. His feet have three large claws while the fourth is now a miniscule dew claw near his ankle. Moving to the tail, its decidedly gator like with the flat paddle toward the end and razor spines along the top. The spines all kinda cluster near the middle of his back with the largest one over the shoulders rather than in the middle where it usually is. The spines start in three rows down his head and back and converge into one line straight down his tail. I see what you did there Mr. Frank...Putting only one row down the tail to avoid one of the pains of drawing Godzilla, the hilariously tiny rows of spines. Well played sir, well played. This Godzilla has a dark green top and a silver grey belly so it blends the 2000's green with the 1990's and eariler black. A very reptilian eye and that little ear seal the deal and Godzilla Neo is a very acceptable version. Real dinosaur anatomy be damned =P.

Legend Godzilla by ChaosGhidorah:
ChaosGhidorah takes what made the Heisei era kaiju interesting and builds on it. Basically all his kaiju have powerful legs, heavily built chests, and are thornier than a hedgehog. His version of Godzilla is a good example. First thing you'll notice is that its very muscled and brutish looking with strong legs and a big chest. Notice that I did not say fat legs, there is some serious definition on those legs so he's turned the Heisei trap into a strength in his design work. The face is another odd thing you'll notice. Usually Godzilla has a mix between dinosaur and cat when it comes to his face. Here the cat has been replaced with wolf as he has a very angular snout and big fangs nestled under a large nasal chamber, at least compared to other Godzilla's. It has ears back there somewhere, though you could honestly mistake it for a spike since they are freaking everywhere. Another thing about his Godzilla is that it is absolutely lathered in spikes, they are absolutely everywhere from his head all the way to the tip of his tail. Touching this Godzilla will send you to the emergency ward with multiple puncture wounds. The belly is the only place there are no spikes, its a smooth reptilian texture and light gray as opposed the slate black of his hide. The eyes are similar to the GMK's but whether he's blind, partially blind or just under high tension everyday is anyone's guess. His spines are normal by Godzilla standards. Overall all a very powerful build and edgy style with this one.

Genesis Godzilla by Tyzilla33191
The Genesis series is slow in coming with only a couple monsters having been seen. Anguirus and Godzilla being the most looked over and redesigned. This is the current style of Genesis Godzilla, at least for right now. While ChaosGhidorah seemed to meld some Heisei into his designs, Tyzilla has elements of Showa in his. Genesis Godzilla has big intelligent eyes that just ooze character. My sketch here doesn't really do the head justice as its disproportionate to its body so thats why it looks rather funky here. Anyway, the classic muzzle is back as is the tri-chambered chest and the stocky legs. Though they aren't bulging with excess skin like the Heisei versions so thats good. The arms are nice and long so he could do so interesting stuff with those. The spikes are whats different with this one. The head spines are actually clustered spikes that run down his neck and then become the standard three rows of spines that we're used to seeing. This Godzilla is very solid and has elements of that old school charm for those who can appreciate it.

So many designs, each with their own style and merits...I could just go with the normal Godzilla 2000 and just change the spine colors. I can't use him as is though because I fucking hate the purple spikes. Let me repeat that for clarity: I FUCKING HATE THE PURPLE SPIKES!!! There, I've said it, now the rest of him was fine but seriously, purple? Purple and green do not look good, unless you still live in the 70's, which defeats the purpose of a millenium look in the first place. There are probably some of you that like the color. I like the design of the spikes themselves but the color must go. I don't care if they're black or tinted red or bone white like they used to be. I'm not having purple, it can go crawl in a hole and die. It's too close to pink for my comfort...god I think I just blinded myself. Anway, I'll probably take the best features of all of them and combine them into a new Hybrid Millenium Godzilla, how's that strike you? You fellow Godzilla fans get to help me with this so tell me the pro's and cons of the versions featured here or what you think is important in a Millenium Godzilla.

out of all the ones, or angles you drew up there, my favorite is the one in the upper left hand corner, it just seems more detailed. great job though

Let your weakness become your strength. If your scared of that monster inside you, become stronger until you can crush it and hear it scream.

I really liked the approach they did with him to. It's a shame the Final Wars suit looks nothing like it. Thanks for the input.

Hmm, I say Godzilla Neo's head (perhaps with a slight influence from Tyzilla's Godzilla Genesis's head), Godzilla Genesis's build for the body, Godzilla FW Concept's spike shape with the more standard arrangement (i.e. big main row and smaller side rows), and ChaosGhidorah's spineyness (excepts maybe a little toned down).

Think I like Ty's the best. Not a fan of the GFW design or the concept art, Matt's... no comment, and I never saw the pic of Legend Godzilla. Good work though.

Takin' over Earth and still kickin' in Uranus.

Proudly 100% against all shit kaiju redesigns, raptorizations, k-girls, and general bullshit that plagues the DA area of the Godzilla fandom.

Clean this shit up.

>> I liked the purple spikes. I think that if they're done right, green and purple can look lovely together. It would've helped if they were darker, yes, but still.

That aside, this is what I think one should do when regarding Godzilla.

Godzilla is a giant monster before all else. His character should NEVER be sacrificed for the sake of looking like a dinosaur - my main problem with various redesigns.

On the opposite end, he IS still a dinosaur, and though he's also a very unique one, he should still feel like one - my other problem with Heisei Godzilla.

The retro-theropod approach is best, I think. A somewhat saurian body, but with his classic barrel, tri-chambered chest and simian arms. Keep it upright and towering, but don't be afraid to make the legs digitigrade - but still massive. The 2000 suit did a good job with this, but without the obstacle of the suit issue, it can be improved upon. If I didn't suck at his face, I'd do up my own design.

Muscle is the key. All my favorite Godzillas keep a measure of agility, so once again, the neo/2000 base is the best to work with. Slow and lumbering, but not so cumbersome that he can't suddenly lash out with shocking speed.

I never liked Heisei's blunt-ended tail. I think keeping the 2000 suit's crocodile-style tail is best, maybe enlarging the spines at the end to give him a quasi-fluke, again, like a crocodile.

Now, the spiky, dark green skin texture and HUGE, jagged spines are largely what define the 2000 suit. I say, keep them. While I myself would still make the spines dark purple at the center before tapering into grey and bone-white, you could easily skip it altogether and go for a mixture of grey and white. Bone sheathed in horn.

As for the head... Look, I'm gonna straight up and say it: I hate Godzillas with white demon-eyes. Godzilla simply isn't a demon. He isn't evil, he isn't malevolent, and he sure as fuck aint undead. He's an animal turned force of nature. His eyes should be animal, but also reflect intelligence. Admittedly, the 2000 suit did a pretty bad job of that. I would go with the Heisei eyes.

Now, another thing that defines the 2000 suit is the reptilian snout. I say play on that, but blend it with the Heisei or Neo designs too. Just try to find that perfect blend of reptile and feline. The neo design did a pretty good job, but it could still be a lot better. Enlarge the teeth, make them a double-row, and give him all twelve of the 2000 suit's fangs. And don't be afraid to give him the classic, feline, divided muzzle that the Heisei and Showa suits had.

I wouldn't shy away from making him more dinosaur-like, but keep one thing in mind: He's a retro-dinosaur. He looks best as one. The heavy, firm legs, large dragging tail and smaller head give him a bottom-heavy, stable, surprisingly plausible appearance.

Oh, and the ears. You gotta have those cute, almost invisible little ears.
:iconrendragonclaw:
Godzilla FW Concept's body is pretty darn spiky without going really overboard like in ChaosGhidorah's case.I can actually see the individual rows and what not. Only thing I really wonder about is the red chest and whether I should include that or not.

I've always liked Godzilla Neo's head but I don't want to blatantly copy it. I could probably try showing a similar skull structure and it would have a similar effect. I don't know exactly what elements of Genesis Godzilla to add ontop of that. The layered cat muzzle and the dino skull kinda cancel each other out except for the snout on the end. The eyes could be added and the hedge row of spines is visible with most of them so they'd probably make it in there somehow.

I could make the spines a mixture between Neo's and FW Concept's. Having three layers down the head and back and have single one go down the tail. I'll wait to see how others feel about the shape of the spines themselves. That three pointed leaf look is pretty iconic.

I would have to say Ty's is the best one. I love Matts, and Chaos' is cool, and that concept art is fasinating-but, for a base for 2000, Ty's is the best, to me at least.

If you would like...well, advice is to strong a word...a suggestion? A mix of some of these features would work extreamely well, and he should probably have pupils if you want him to look intellegent.

I like the two on the left better: Legend Godzilla and FW concept Goji. I like the way Matt Frank drew his Godzilla, but I never exactly became a large fan of the design. I'm not going to question you on why you hate the purple spikes, but i'm gonna say.... they look better than the plain looking Heisei spikes ^^;.

Don't make the Goji mad!!!! :headbang:

There are always consequences for playing God.
:iconrendragonclaw:
I had a feeling you knew your stuff. Wow, I get the feeling I'll make quite a few enemies if I screw this up ^^; .

I remember you saying something about the Neo's body being unstable or something but you never went into detail why. I'd kinda like to know. The body should be pretty simple, mostly upright with powerful digitigrade legs underneath and the tail swinging down behind him, gator fluke and all.

Agree with you about the eyes. The only time Godzilla's eyes are one color is when they're glowing and he's using his Atomic Breath. Though you gotta wonder about Ghost Godzilla and possibly Kiryu and whether they are possible exceptions to that.

Skin color is doable. Godzilla 2000 is known for being green despite the cover art so I can probably work with that.I wondered about FW Concept's red chest but I suppose if he's not going meltdown on us than it shouldn't be there. I was thinking of actually having them either tinted red or glowing red in the final pic but I suppose I could relent and make it a reddish purple. The color combo still strikes me funny but if its that important to his character I can try to make it work.

The head is going to be the crux of this whole thing. I probably should have checked for more pics of him. Cat and lizard, cat and dinosaur, it might be a tough mix but I think I should be able to come up with something that satisfies both. And of course the ears, mustn't forget the ears ;).

If you have concerns regarding the Neo's design I'd like to know. Any cons and pros for any of the Godzilla designs would help a lot, really. If you don't feel like sharing on the deviation you could always send me a note.
