Marez, The Blood General

Description

Marez, the Blood General
In nature conflict, like change, is inevitable. The need to protect, to hunt, to kill is ingrained in every living thing since the dawn of time. To gain and retain territory, the need to avenge grievances and cull the weak from the strong so that the strong may grow unheeded by the mewling lamentations of the ill, and the crippled; the essential role of the predator was made from these things. So it was that an agent of the predator spirit would be created. For thousands of years he laid dormant, biding his time and growing stronger and stronger. His brethren fulfilled their purpose and fell dormant time and again. Then civilization came to pass and he awoke at last. The youngest of the four arose from the Earth’s embrace with all the fury and anger to which he was entitled. Marez, the wolf of war, had come. The world needed a more diligent and passionate guardian, one that would not wait for wrongs against it to be committed, a champion that would tear the pride from those that sought to hurt and molest it. Marez is effectively the planet’s personal warrior. While Shimaku is it’s executioner, Beelzebub is it’s jubilant confiscator, and Dryton is the great equalizer, Marez is it’s vengeance for atrocities committed against it. With the amount of destruction and foolishness committed by the hands of man and monster alike, Marez has quite a long campaign ahead of him.

Marez first appeared during the rise of Rome. It was said that Romulus and Remus were suckled by a she wolf. This isn’t completely accurate. What really happened was that Marez had decided to test humanity and had spilt a pool of his own blood for the infants to wean off of. Romulus managed to drink just enough and thus profited more from the mighty entity’s power. Naturally he went on the found the largest empire in the history of mankind while Remus, who drank too much, eventually degenerated into a half beast and was said to have been slain by his own brother’s hand out of mercy. Marez, who was named from a union of both the names for the god of war, saw the extent of human potential and took keen interest in their activities. Whenever conflict of considerable scale was waged, Marez and his blood spawned pack of blood wolves would monitor it in silence, waiting. At times Marez would exude his influence over the combating parties, encouraging them to destroy one another, until only one remained. Marez’s primary goal is to cull the weak, promote the strong, and destroy anything that defiles the natural order. Man’s recent ascension above all other basic life forms through the use of technology has curled Marez’s lip and he now sees them as creatures that must be taught a harsh lesson. Being a titanic red wolf with black tribal markings and the ability use his blood as a lethal weapon and medium through which to summon his own personal army, Marez is more than equipped to deal with humanities feeble attempts at resistance. Nothing however, compares to the ferocity of his own explosive spirit, which he can forge into a burning blade of destruction from his jaws.

While Marez views humanity as a potential and obvious threat to the planet’s continued existence, he still carries a strange pride for them. The K-CELL known as Rema Anderson is proof of this and is just as hot headed, violent, and warrior-like as he is. What he and his pack can’t get to, she more often than not can. During these recent years both of them have been sighted in a area affectionately labeled ‘The Blood Dunes’; an extremely dangerous place located in the depths of the Sahara Desert were combat and life and death struggles are the norm. This area seems to be Marez’s den and any attempt to destroy the lupine titan has resulted in incredible loss of life and property. Sometimes the Blood General and his pack will disappear for days at a time, only to reappear clear across the globe, drifting through some backwards residence on the edge of civilization. Several times Marez has ventured into major cities and butchered hundreds of inhabitants, for seemingly no reason. The odd thing is, he seems to leave more rural areas alone and instead focuses his efforts on industrialized areas and military sites; the later being almost playful, the former being torn to shreds and burnt to ash. People who have actually survived these attacks claim that just being around the lupine terror and his brood is enough to drive some into a homicidal frenzy. Apparently Marez’s blood inspires war just as much as much as it perpetrates it, inducing a drug like effect on those that inhale, ingest or are come in skin contact with it. While many environmental groups are calling Marez a symbol of nature’s wrath, the world government has labeled him a living natural disaster and the Vatican has exclaimed that he is one of the many signs of the apocalypse. Whatever Marez truly is, one thing is for certain; wherever he and his pack strike, destruction and carnage follow.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess I can let the cat out the bag now. All four of them are here so the I can go ahead and disclose what the theme is with these guys. Shimaku, Beelzebub, Dryton, and Marez are effectively the four kaiju of the apocalypse. Shimaku represents death, Beelzebub is a combination of conquest and pestilence, Dryton embodies famine and Marez is war incarnate. Wolves are another animal thats hard to tamper with. Everyone and their mother puts spikes on their wolves or some exotic motif that sometimes takes away from the mystique of the animal itself. Everything Marez is translates directly back to his theme. He's red because the red rider is red, his strongest weapon is an energy blade that he projects from his jaws because war carries a sword, He has tribal scar like markings because war brings tattoos and scars, his abilities involving blood are there because blood shed is the end result of all violent conflict. The name was tricky as I originally just wanted to put 'Mars' and 'Ares' together which makes 'Mares'. Unfortuantely that ends up being the name of female horses which would be fricken weird. So I used a 'Z' instead of an 'S' so that it reads properly. Turns out Marez is a family name that has to do with the sea and lots of roaming. I figured that was alright as war has lots to do with that and wolves do roam around their territories quite a bit.

I'm kinda worried that this may shed a negative outlook on wolves. Trust me, thats not my intention. Actually my goal with the four was to use creatures that mankind universeally finds either frightening or disgusting. No one likes snakes, everyone is grossed out by flies, everyone is terrorified of sharks, and everyone has conflicting ideas on wolves, much like war itself. I wanted to do it this way so that the main monsters would really force us to look at ourselves and our fears. Its the common theme in most kaijuverses to have something strong resembling Godzilla or being a giant lizard/dinosaur monster in general as the main monster. I wanted to throw that shit for a loop. In fact, I'm going out of my way to parody some of those stereotypes. For example, Beelzebub's attitude and character is a subtle slam against Mothra who stands as this pinnacle of peace and morality within the Godzilla series. I'll keep the rest of my ideas hidden for now but you guys who like Ultraman might get a tad offended when I fill that particular nich in my universe.
