Ogra,Gorgo Sketch Study by RenDragonClaw Ogra,Gorgo Sketch Study by RenDragonClaw
This past week I must have gone insane, because I went ahead and did something ludicrous with this sketch study. Instead of narrowing my choices down to around four or so as per usual, I decided to double that number and add eight different designs from which to choose from. Its amazing because you wouldn't think that Gorgo or Ogra would be that popular. They come in all shapes and sizes so there certainly is quite a number to choose from in terms of traits for a Hybrid this time around.

Sea Mother Ogra: By keizerghidorah
This design is the mostly pebbly of the bunch, it has warty sections in various places all over its body, not too overly uniform about it either. The ears seem more like spines or a pair of crests as they are more a part of the back texture than the head, The head has overlapping sharp scales on the snout and brow. The eye is white with a red pupil, no iris. Teeth are large and spaced apart with spined dewlap on the throat. Body is very thick and ponderous, seems to have thin ankles though. Tail is very thick and rather short with a small number of spines on the end. Three digits on each limb. The colors of the body are green mixed with dark green warty armor and a dull white belly.

Showa Ogra by: British Lion-Columbia Ltd.
The original kaiju of this group. A tall glowering creature with blood red eyes, black skin, and a deep tannish cream belly. Has lots of needle like teeth, especially in the front of the mouth. Snout is short and round, the brows are large and furrowed. The ears are square shaped but angled so that from the front they seem like horns. Skin is heavily warted, scaled, and textured to the point the creature almost appears crocadilian. Arms are held like a kanagroo's and have massive bear like claws. It has four digits on each claw, three talons and one thumb appendage. Neck is very thick and rather moderate in length. body overall is somewhat like the first Godzilla. Toe claws are splayed widely apart and the tail is rather short but still usable as a blunt weapon.

Neo Ogra by: Matt Frank/Kaijusamurai
A more saurian remake of the Showa it seems. Dull grey limbs and face with pure black warty armor down its back and tail. The belly is more of a desert tan. Eyes are completely red sans iris. Muzzle large and rounded with scaled plates and an armored ridge running up it and past the brows. Brows are very large and spiked. Eyes are deep set and the jaws have descrernable lips. Chin is pointed. The ears are 'U' shaped and angled straight off the brows and lower edge of the upper jaw. Has a slight 'W' shape to the fin inside the ear. Neck is thick and banded with the tanish throat have a trichambered look to it. Shoulders have slight bits of the back armor dotted around the joints. Forearms have sharp edges on the undersides. The claws are like the Showa's but smaller with much smaller claws. Rest of the body is believed to be much like the Showa save for slightly digitigrade legs. Has a gator hide like chest.

Frog Foot Ogra by: Crocazil
Uniformly grey in color, save for the red eyes lined with black. Body is dromesaur like with a short slender tail and comparably thin, fully digitigrade limbs. Hand and foot claws are massive with long digits, long claws, and webbing. Belly appears to be scaled in small diamond formation. Rest of hide has massive armor like warts. Brows are squarish. The ear is squarish and tiny, flat against the head. Neck appears to have a sort of clift or 'adams apple'.

Tripp Ogra by: invaderTRIPP666
Navy blue with a sky blue to white belly. Yellow claws and pink webbing on the ears. Tyrannosaur like head with horned brows. Razor spines down neck and back. Gator like tail that seems to equal Godzilla's in length. Long arms with three large claws. Indication of pelvic bone and wiry digitigrade legs suggestion moderate case of raptorization. Retrosaur stance and a long tongue. Ankle joints are ridged. Feet are massive and bird toed. Red eye is present but hard to spot. Forearms are ridged on the underside.

Xian Ogra by: xianbeauty
Appears to be very much like an updated Showa. Hide is still scaled and bumpy but not to the same extreme. Belly is very smooth and a tannish white. Hide is completely green. Talons are bone colored. Ears are triangular and fan shaped. Has a row of triangular spines running down neck, three such rows in between the brows. Godzilla size nostrils. Massive bear claws present with extra muslce definition in the arms.

WOG Ogra by: The-Great-MM
Took minor artistic liberties but appears to be rather smooth hide wise. Heavily muscled with three stout claws on each hand. Snout is rounded, the brow has a small horn near each end and the ear fins are massive and triangular. Skin is a greenish grey, the belly is dark green with gator like armor running down the entirety. Legs are large and stout, the foot claws armored. Tail is of average length, capable of whipping and bludgeoning. Tail is thick and meaty. Seems to be either completley upright or slightly retrosaur in stance. Yellow eyes, deep grey claws.

Speckled Ogra by: kaijulord21
Has an 'upright' retrosaur stance. Widely splayed feet claws. Four digits on feet, three on hands. Legs are plantigrade, arms are digitigrade/ bear. Shoulders have armored schutes. Back has spined ridges, neck has smaller ridges. Ear fins are large and splayed out, four sections to each ear. Head is allosaur in nature with an overbite. Big brows, beady black eyes. Colors are grey with blue grey spots up and down its body, belly is a rust like brown. Has a fin like edge to its moderatly sized paddle like tail.

Gator Ogra by: Ashere
Massive gator like head mixed with tyrannosaur. Thick, powerful, armor ridged neck. Ear fins are more like horns. Small eyes. Digitigrade crossed with plantigrade legs, seemingly capable of being both at the same time. Thick, barrel like body, massive chest with therapod hips. Big claws and feet. Extremely long and armored ridged tail. Tail seems to turn a deep black a fourth of the way down. Could be considered some kind of bizzare raptorized retrosaur. Design brings confusion and is hard to catergorize.

So that leaves us on what to piece the Hybrid together with. Personally I feel Ogra/Gorgo is combination of newt, classic therapod kaiju, and bear. I'd primarily stick with the classic colors as green just feels wrong to me when concerning Ogra. A little saurian nature in the head, like the Neo would be alright. I'd like the ear fins to be pointed but not too large or small. Claws I'd like to keep big and massivley powerful, its one of her defining traits, webbed or not. Her size and raw girth is another element thats a part of her as well so she's a lot like Godzilla in that regard. The retrosaur stance would be as far as she'd be able to go and even that might be too much. Tail wise, she's rather short but thick and paddle like. Gator Orga freaks me out with the sheer length of that tail, its like some Vertigo got mixed in there along with a T-Rex and a bull crocadile. Pure red eyes are essential, thats another trait of hers. Teeth would be plentiful but not needlessly so, I'd imagine something good for catching sea life. Armor can range from semi warty to gator armor, I don't know nor particularly care as the original was a mess in that regard. She was bumpy in general. Anyway, time for feedback. Ideas for the SD's humor are also appreciated.

I didn't know Matt Frank did Gorgo or Ogra can someone send me a photo of his design?

I have it but it was from Matt's old Godzillasamurai account which has since been purged and replaced. His marker colored depiction of Ogra was not among the things he kept in his gallery.

The outline conveys about as much of it as you can see from the original image. It's only a bust shut so I speculated the rest.

Ogra IS the thing most people think of when you say 'Gorgo'; despite the it being the infant in the film that is actually named Gorgo and the mother Ogra being the one that levels London.

Anyway, thanks =).

Awesome drawings! I'm in the crowd who wants the Showa design and coloration. I guess only thing I would add is the ridges underneath her arms in Matt's drawing.

I've batted that arm ridge idea around a bit and it makes sense for her to have them. Her primary weapon is her claws and the more damage she can do per swing the better. Someone else said that the Neo's arm 'fins' were a bad idea but Ogra is an armored behemoth from hell so its likely to pop up still.

Well, another sketch study where I probably shouldn't give my input because I don't know much about Ogra. So I'll just go with a "what I think looks cool."
The original and Neo catch my eye immediately as "really awesome." The ridges on the face of the original look cool but the semi-saurian look of the Neo would probably work very well together. The Original's stance seems the most appropriate, as I agree that the retrosaur or standard dinosaur pose would look a little too weird given the girths you've illustrated. I'm looking at the WOG version, and I think the claws look nice and large, giving you that look of power you want.
Right, well that's my concept. Another interesting sketch study, as usual.

Sadly, I've only seen this movie once. That said, the Showa Ogra is a friggin' beast and that design just "works." Too bad you can't really tell what color she is in the movie as it's really damn dark, but a dark green and grey mix sounds good.

And damn, is that a lot of Ogras. The patience you have to sketch all of these so damn well is as amazing as the talent you have.

Sketching them all, and making them fit in the same place, was truly hell. Kaijulord21's Ogra just barely made it in there. Xianbeauty's Ogra is just hanging out back there lol.

Anyway, Showa Ogra is the undoubtedly the best foundation from which to build the Hybrid. There is just no way around it.

What a lot of people don't realize is that Ogra and Gorgo actually are digitigrade. It's just that they're done in such a way that they still look sturdy and powerful.

And I'm pretty sure they actually are shades of green.

Anyway, the more Showa the better, imo. The only thing I could possibly suggest is maybe making her head more alligator-like. Not crocodile, like the one you have in the study. I mean gator, since they have broad, flat snouts like Ogra and Gorgo, and it would go along with the crocodilian armor they have. But even then, eh.

You got a good point there. Being that the monsters are seen at night most of the time (and the lighting in that movie was next to shit) its hard to tell what color they really are since they always appear dark. A very dark green to black is the most likely color we have for the hide.

Slightly digitigrade is probably where its at with Ogra. It's probably subtle and hard to spot considering her towering size and girth. Either way, it seems to be a universal constant that Ogra should remain firmly rooted in her original appearance with perhaps some freshening up. The face is what gives me a bit of a pickle as its somewhere between dinosaur, gator and frog. The alligator muzzle is a good suggestion, I might just try that a few times to see how it looks.

If you watch the film, when the main characters are being guided around by Shawn (the proto-kenny), he explains that the dragon like figurine on the wall is a figure of 'Ogra' a local sea god and mythological figure. Though never explicitly named in the film, we generally refer to the mother as Ogra. The baby, who was labeled by the dorkin circus owner of the same name, named him 'Gorgo' as a reference to his terror inducing appearance which had sent a diver into shock so bad that it killed him via heart attack. It was a reference to the gorgons of greek mythology who could kill with their appearance alone. The film is named 'Gorgo' in much the same way the Zelda series is named 'The Legend of Zelda'. The main monster isn't Gorgo himself, rather his mother who goes to save him. Thus the story is already set from the get go to be a story about mankind's ignorance and greed bringing about great tragedy and destruction. In much the same way almost every Zelda game isn't about Link, its about Link saving Zelda.

And I want to point out some of elements we've talked about:

"Proto-Kenny"

"Dorkin Circus"
"The Legend of Zelda"

Ogra seems to have more universal designs than other monsters, I'm glad that there is too. You gotta high five the Europeans for making a scary kaiju that's based off Godzilla, unlike a certain company who took the raptorization path....But anyway, makes me want to rent the movie again. =)

Togera is a funny kaiju. He's got elements of Godzilla and Ogra. His head has Ogra parts, his cry is sometimes screechy like Godzilla along with his usual fire powers, and finally he can extend spines from his body, not overly sure where that trait came from but I imagine either Anguirus or Gamera.

Wish they'd make a new WOTM, the game's maps were epic in their own way, especially Ultra-V's place. The only things they were missing was Raptros and Zorugulon's origins, and a overgrown jungle filled with large fauna to use for our own personal throwing objects.

Zorugulon and Raptros were secret characters and given a sequal they'd probably be given origins. I find it kind of irritating that none of the monsters ever got a real ending. They show you where they came from but they never show you what would result from the monster becoming top dog on the planet. As far as replay value and sheer fun, WOTM was boss. The Godzilla fighting games were alright but WOTM had a larger element of strategy given that there were counter moves, decent combos, and terrain that could give you an advantage. Nothing can top the Godzilla game's sense of over all power and destruction though. Nothing quite says 'F'ing PWND' like getting killed by a full power beam attack and getting sent into a building and then have that building toppling ontop of you for the lulz. THEN HAVING IT DONE AGAIN IN SLOW MOTION IN A REPLAY OF WIN. That jungle idea sounds awesome as hell, as would an artic area or a place with more regional mountains or something to that effect. Maybe even a lake community. So many cool things they could have done with that series. Keeping it firmly rooted in the 1960's though is perhaps the reason why it didn't. They got done with the game and propably realized that they ran out of material.

I've always be thinking about the other customs too, like how congar gets crushed and the military tranforms him into mecha-congar, and probably then afterwards since mecha-congar was defeated they dump him in antartica.

My story would be that when they dump him there they are unknown of a UFO that has crashed in the area, thus the liquid pours in congar through glacier movement causing him to transform in Glacier Congar (because of his 4th custom).

Someone should pick-up the property in making a new WOTM, maybe if there was a WOTM Movie....

Very cool- it's nice to see all of these together! As far as picking favorites goes, I'd have to stick with the original. The others are cool in their own right, but none of them quite catch her spirit- probably because hers is such a simple design. It'd probably be very easy to lose her sense of self when designing her, what with the urge to add onto the design and all.
One of the things I remembered most about Ogra was the scene Gregole mentioned. I can't tell you how many times I recreated that scene at the public pool, lol. It was one of the few times I ever thought a kaiju looked genuinely scary... so yeah. Definitely keep the red eyes and all that goodness. Other than that, I dunno what to say. Uh.. have fun? XP

lol. I noticed how insanely different a lot of the others were I began to wonder to myself: 'did anybody ever really watch that movie?'. kaijulord21 I can understand, he has a certain theme going on with his kaijuverse and a limited color palatte to work with being that he does things 'the hard way'. Matt's idea is closer to the base but you know he can't help but make her more like a dinosaur. Crocazill, he likes lizards and that comes through in his version. Xianbeauty always tries to capture the classic elements of the monster in question but her version just wasn't terror inducing enough and it was green. MM brings out the showa in everything, can't really fault him for making Ogra a beefcake. InvaderTRIPp666...I think its apparent that she's among those that love to raptorize everything. Ashere...god. I have no idea whats going on there. I think its on a similar vibe as Felipe, it tries to apply real life anatomy to a giant monster. I've seen the Varan and Godzilla Ashere did too, they have the same issues. The texture is incredible and she's certainly frightening enough but god if it doesn't resemble Ogra very much. I have to actually devote effort into finding the ears.

Among some other versions I've seen, TT pretty much hit the nail on the head I think. If Gregole tried her she'd come out just fine with much bigger feet. You'd probably manage her pretty well yourself. As for me, I'll try in see if I can organize this rabble into something that respects the original as much as possible while still freshening her up a bit.
