WKAY Third Place - Riftwitch

Description

I remember the second time I came to this...'Earth'. It was fresh off of a great defeat. My song, my beautiful, beautiful song...had been defeated. This is not the first time I've tasted the bitterness of failure. No, far from it. I have encountered many beings who had the spirit and skill necessary to face me on my own stage; after their pitiful attempts at directly assaulting me had fallen laughably short. How their little cylinders of metal and fire embraced the flames of my own form and become nothing but another chord to my tempo. I remember the cobbled stones of that city...it's cool murky fog and tiny little streets. How they screamed...how they sang when I touched them....how they danced....how they BURNED.

The irony of being cast down by the very performer who allowed me entry wasn't lost on me. Quite fitting actually. How could I not abide defeat when my opponent, tiny little meatling as she was, sang herself to death to free her people? Unlike the wretched light of those vaporous heavenly bodies, those millions of churning suns, the song strong enough to overwhelm my own is the only validation that staves off my artistic conquest. However, this time around I had a bit of help~

Once more my words reached those ignorant enough to read them. Once more, my incantation was recited. Once more, I emerged. Once more, I SANG. I appeared nearly a world away from my previous conquest. A planet very similar to the last one...but of a different parallel. Rather than a smoggy city, I arrived before an island continent. The western coast of this...Australia was an interesting place. Gathering my 'chorus' wasn't as easy as before. The places the meatlings gathered in were much more sporadic this time. Vast wastes of wilderness and rusty dust made finding suitable gatherings troublesome...until I found 'him'.

He was an ancient being, much like myself. A being of unnatural make that stole the meat from the meatlings and cobbled together grander and grander forms from them. To wear their blood about himself and make himself a body. There was little he could claim from me, my form not suitable for a material being in form but not in spirit. His frustration soon gave way to curiosity and from curiosity to amusement. It appeared that we both had suffered great defeats at the hands of these meatlings they called 'human'. His desire to see them destroyed and for their world to be his was kindred to my own in claiming their world. How I wanted to make it sing in chorus with the many before it! Alas, his greatest goal was something indistinct, something he called 'perfection'. It puzzled me, what point was there in striving for perfection in a form that was so temporary? So limited in the matter that supported it? However, our goals were collaborative. For as my chorus grew, the interruptions to his predations became less frequent. Meanwhile, his relentless search for perfection could come at any time, even the daylight hours where I was unable to take form. We did however feel the need for another. The meatlings were smart little vessels, cunning and adaptive. They were already studying how to combat me and I assume Him as well when he revealed himself. They could not be allowed to organize so, chaos was our ally. To our surprise we found a creature from the south, from the tiny island he emerged, spreading a fog of fear. When we found the beast, he was attempting to make his way north, toward the tiny islands he would normally call home. We came upon him and offered him something more. The meatlings made an ample feed but the beast fed on something more than flesh. Much as I coveted the their song, the beast coveted their fear. So it was that we three, unique and horrid in our own way, each found something of use from denying the meatlings their lives.

Together we spread terror unimaginable. The fear of the fog drove them together, paranoid and terrorized. They were then easy to lure into my cloister. He was then free to seek out all the exotic flesh he could possibly hold, unchallenged. It wasn't long before the entire continent was ours, the meatlings could not even contact their fellows across the oceans as all of their precious cities lay in ruins. A few may have escaped...but it was of no consequence. The rest were corralled in a ruin they once called...'Darwin'. The beast fed from them, He had already selected those whose eccentric qualities made their flesh of interest. As me, I kept them contained. Bombarded by my song until they begged to be free of their terror. Naturally I obliged. A single sting and they took me within them, blooming into glorious celebration!

It was not quite so simple though. Gathering all the meatlings in one place lured another creature like ourselves to 'Darwin'. It was like a demon but I knew it to be another denizen of the great void among the stars. It's breath cold, it's hide hard...but not hard enough. The Demon came for the meatlings, chased out by some other beast. The Beast soon interrupted The Demon, tearing him away from the meatlings and mauling him with great force. So ferocious was the assault, The Demon had little time to react before it was sent tumbling through a chunk of glass specked ruin. It was quick to recover, it's hide weathering the assault. However it's attempts to harm The Beast were rendered moot. It could not lay a hand on it, much as He had learned before. The Beast's fog assaulted The Demon where it's body could not defend it, floating just out of reach with murderous visage. The Demon screamed as it scratched its own hide, imagining a fate that it alone could perceive. In its panic it began to trample my chorus! Such insult could not go unpunished. As the sun dimmed, I burst into my full glory. Crowing with delight I took over the battle, leaving The Beast to regather the meatlings. My song and sting tore and hounded The Demon. It's chilling breath and great strength were of little use against I whose performance could not be questioned. I burned him...lashed him...swatted and scourged him. He made a clumsy dancer, but his SCREAMS were a delight I had rarely heard. The Demon was stubborn though, it was likely he would have lasted into the morning to slay more of my beloved chorus. He had different ideas. He lifted The Demon with one great claw and with strength known only in proportion to the smaller creatures of this world, slammed The Demon into the ground. Again and again The Demon was tossed about, like a gutted carcass. Wailing impotently as it's failings did little to free it. It breathed a great gout of chill upon Him and with a twist of luck the shell about His face was cracked. Falling away to reveal the dark and ancient truth beneath the flesh. Vengeance was swift, the great light tore into The Demon with blistering intensity. Even its dense hide shuddering and discombobulating under its wake. Weakened, He let loose his own sting upon The Demon's great shoulder. I watched it give way and melt, siphoned away into Him...to become part of him. The Demon however tore away, scrambling away on three of its limbs as it had learned that there would be nothing but terror and death here. I watched The Demon flee with some reluctance, he would have made a great member of my chorus...but He had gotten enough of The Demon to be patient. It was a sign that things were beginning to move.

It wasn't long before we had another visitor. This one did not feed on the meatlings. Instead it sought to kill them. It's hatred of them was more pure than His...but had little in the way of reason. He quickly captivated our little visitor's attention, imposing his considerable will upon it. It was a feathered and lean creature, his strengths were somewhat like our own...but he alone commanded a force even I could not tamper with: Time. He sensed a valuable asset in our visitor, this 'Absolute trigger' to the disaster He wished to engineer. I watched The Absolute become captivated by Him, eager to spill meatling blood and topple their hives of steel and glass and stone. We watched him go...and waited.

It wasn't long before 'the others' began their great battle. The symphony of crushing defeats and desperate victories enthralled me and I was eager to join Him and The Beast as they departed to spectate over it. The Absolute was given one final message before it kicked one of the meatlings great metal water hives into the air and rode it into the fray. Oh what a delightful ruckus it caused! So much destruction in so little time. However, even The Absolute could not stand before those two great forces that fought for matters I knew all too well. What was stronger? The wounded heart or the proud thirst for conquest? It was somewhat disenchanting to see one eventually triumph but He did not care for The Purple Ooze's victory as it soon departed from this world with its other half in tow, of little consequence. We then returned to our kingdom of 'Oz' and began to form our plans anew. Only we three remained and it was likely that He would soon strive to acquire the feast that was laid before us in that hive called 'San Francisco'. The Beast would depart soon...his taste for fear taking him...home.

I was intent on continuing to spread my song anew, expand my audience and their worship once again! I had managed to find a small pocket of meatlings. Having hid away in the craggy cliffs. They were tiny and young. Their voices tender and unrefined. I hardly noticed when I acquired meatlings so young. Regardless I would make them mine. It was with great surprise that a strange presence came before me.

It was a meatling...but in appearance only. Heavy limbed and wide hipped, a body used to in-taking a great many things at once. A predatory emerald gleam shone from the meatling's eyes as it stood before me, a instrument in tow. It's manner was cocksure, it's voice  teasing the possibility of many, and it's swagger...was impressive for one so small. As soon as I made eye contact with it, the meatling spoke:

"Hey YOU! Yeah you! You psychedelic, floating, Human Torch ripoff!"

I attempted to ignore it, the ramblings of an meatling are of little consequence unless it has rhythm. I reached out toward them, my many fangs bared and their little voices teasing the air with their shrieks.

"HEY! Get away from them you FLAMING BITCH!"

It was then a cord struck the air. Struck ME. This little meatling was challenging me! I turned to face it, my form flaring to its full state. I mocked the meatling, it was so small, so insignificant. What could it do against me.

"Me? I could do a lot of things. Probably not enough but a lot. Those kid's parents on the other hand~"

Behind her emerged the blood kin of the young meatlings, carrying all manner of instrument. Some simply bringing themselves.

"~I'm pretty sure THEY can help me kick your tentacle ass back to hell! Your move 'Rift Witch'. You don't have any socks to blow off...but we challenge YOU...to a ROCK OFF!"

The meatling announced her claim with a grin, having far too many teeth that were far too sharp for a meatling of her...type. But it mattered little. If the meatling thought it could challenge me, then challenge me it would. So it was that I once more contested the will of a meatling in a battle of song.

...If only I had known the humiliation I would suffer.
